The district administration will prepare a comprehensive action plan for the conservation of the Pampa, Manimala, Achenkovil, and Kallada rivers which course through the district, District Collector P. Venugopal has said. The support of local self-government institutions, government agencies, and non-government organisations (NGOs) would be enlisted, he said while addressing a meeting of various departmental heads and office-bearers of NGOs convened to discuss the proposed Pampa Action Plan, at the collectorate conference hall here on Thursday. Some river banks in the district had been in the possession of encroachers. Clearing all these encroachments should be given immediate priority for river conservation. Indiscriminate sand-mining was another major problem facing the rivers.
