Activist held for 'damaging' dustbin

S.P. Narayanaswamy, a 63-year-old social activist involved with public issues, including the protection of the Tirupananthaal Lake in Pammal, was arrested by police on Friday for "damaging a dustbin." He was remanded to 15 days judicial custody after being produced before a magistrate in Chengalpattu. Shankar Nagar police came to Mr. Narayanaswamy's house on Moses Street, Eswari Nagar in Pammal on Friday morning and asked him to come to the police station for an enquiry. They told him that M. Lingesan, Executive Officer of Pammal Municipality had lodged a complaint, alleging that he (Mr. Narayanaswamy) had damaged a dustbin placed outside his house.
