Adopt a tiger?

The decline in tiger population is alarming ('Feline worries', March 9). Poachers will not rest till the last of the big cats is killed and its parts are sold in the market. Such is their greed. Once tigers become extinct, the value of their parts will go up further. The rich and the famous will add tiger parts to their 'priceless' collections to show off to friends. Perhaps, the only way to save the tiger is by encouraging its domestication, at least by those who can afford it. If the government cannot protect tigers, it should announce an 'adopt a tiger' scheme! Shyamal Choudhary, Kolkata. The bureaucracy in the tiger reserves is hand in glove with poachers. Apparently, all these years officials have closed their eyes to poaching in return for a few rupees. Now these officials might have moved on, leaving an entire species on the verge of extinction. The government should order an inquiry and ensure that unscrupulous officials are brought to book. Smitha Raghav, On email.
