A group of advocates, led by Bharatiya Janata Party leader M.B. Zirali, on Wednesday staged a protest against the growing noise pollution from allegedly unauthorised loudspeaker systems installed in several mosques in the city. Submitting a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Zirali pointed out the “blatant violation” of The Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, as noise levels from the loudspeaker systems installed in several mosques exceeded the standards. He said the police must initiate action to prevent noise pollution, not only from the mosques, but from any other installations and enforce noise pollution control measures. He said that as per the rules, a loudspeaker or a public address system shall not be used at night (between 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) except on closed premises. Mr. Zirali threatened to launch an intensified agitation, if the district administration failed to enforce laws to check noise pollution in the city at the earliest. ‘The police must initiate action to prevent noise pollution’
