Solar distillation is an age old practice. But Terry Thomas of Kerala has devised a simple and inexpensive apparatus which can supply a family's daily potable water needs for just Rs.3000. The simple 'window-like' apparatus or 'still' is made of aluminium and glass and is light weight. Each panel costs around Rs 600. On a good sunny day, it can produce two litres of potable water. Terry Thomas, a Soil and Water Management expert, heads a small organisation called Planet Kerala at Kozhikode. Recently he won the 'India Country Level Development Marketplace 2005' Award by the World Bank. It was his idea of using solar distillation to provide safe drinking water to coastal households that bagged the award.
