A major ongoing afforestation project has significantly reduced wind and dust levels in Beijing and Tianjin. Recent statistics for Beijing, show that the 16.5 tons of dust deposited per kilometer during 1997 represented a drop of 4.5 tons on the 1986 level. Silt accumulating in the Miyun Reservoir, the capital's main source of water located in the northeastern part of the city, has dropped by 60 percent on levels common in the early 1960s.
