LUCKNOW,Aug. 29: After Bihar, Uttar Pradesh is preparing to face the fury of floods. Almost all the major rivers in the state, including Gomti, Sharda and Kuwano are in spate following torrential rains over the past several days. According to official sources, some of the rivers have crossed the danger mark on Thursday night.
The Gomti river was flowing 0.74 metres above the danger mark in Sultanpur district, while in Lucknow, the river is just 0.30 metres below the danger mark.
The Gomti has already started unleashing its fury in the state capital. The river has inundated many low-lying areas of the posh Gomti Nagar and residential colonies in Vipul Khand and Viram Khand have been flooded. Residents have been forced to either shift to the upper floors or move out. All schools in this posh locality have been closed till Sunday.
The two cremation grounds at Gulala Ghat and Bhainsakund have been submerged, leaving no room for cremation of the dead. People are now flocking to the sole electric crematorium in the state capital to perform the last rites of the dead.
Meanwhile, the Sharda river in Lakhimpur district is flowing 0.18 metres above the danger mark, officials said.
Following heavy rains, the Ghagra river is also flowing above the danger mark in three districts, Barabanki, Faizabad and Ballia. The Ghagra was flowing 0.21 metres above the danger mark in Barabanki district and 0.65 metres above the danger mark in Ballia district. In Faizabad, the Ghagra was flowing 0.5 metres above the danger mark.
State irrigation department officials said that rivers, including the Rapti, Gandak, Rohini and Yamuna are expected to cross the danger mark any moment.
Continuing heavy rainfall in the river basin area and the foothills of the Himalayas are the main reasons for the spate in rivers, officials added.
Meanwhile, large-scale relief operations are underway to provide respite to the nearly two million people across 21 flood-affected districts of the state.
CM Mayawati has directed state irrigation minister Naseemuddin Siddiqui and the chief secretary to monitor the flood situation.
