Local villagers under banner of Lok Maitri launched protests against the state govt move. Indore: The State Government, which faced stiff opposition from people and NGOs when it gave its nod for disposal of toxic waste of the Union Carbide, is contemplating to dispose 10 tons of toxic waste of Hindustan Insecticide Ltd. ( HIL) at the incinerator in Pithampur. The Indosulphane waste of HIL would be disposed of at Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd. Meanwhile, local people under the banner of Lok Maitri, an NGO, raised their voice against the step of the State Government. It is to be noted that the State Government had disposed of 346 tons of the Carbide waste in Pithampur facility. The latest move of the government to dispose of highly toxic waste in a treatment, storage and disposal facility ( TSDF) in Pithampur would face stiff opposition from local villagers, who raised their apprehension over adverse effects of the toxic waste on environment and local people. It seems the state government will face mass protests if it goes ahead with its plan of dumping waste in Pithampur. According to Lok Maitri convener Dr Gautam Kothari, both the Carbide waste and HIL waste are hazardous for local people. Despite knowing it, the state government allowed to dispose waste at Pithampur unit. The HIL waste contains Indosulphane and its smoke too contains toxic elements and may cause serious effect on the health of local residents. Sources said that the Government was planning to dispose the waste on the basis of reports it received following disposal of the Carbide waste, but both the chemicals are quite different. Dr Kothari further said that they had pointed out that the facility in Pithampur was not ‘ suitable’ for disposal of toxic waste as it located near villages. As per rules, the facility must be set up around 500 meters away from the residential areas but the Ramky incinerator has been set up at a distance of just 150 meters. “ Instead of taking action against Ramky Enviro, the government has been putting life of thousands of residents in danger. They even violated the orders of the Supreme Court by installing an multi- effect evaporator there and the Central Pollution Board also neglected it,” Dr Kothari said. He said that movement against disposal of toxic waste would continue and they would submit a PIL in the High Court in this regard. A delegation of ‘ Lok Maitri’ will also register its protest with the State Minister for Housing and Environment Jayant Mallaiyya.
