Giddarpindi (Jalandhar): Thier fight is not yet over. After surviving flood, the residents of the district are battling skin diseases, nausea, chest congestion and diarrhoea due to stagnant water.
The problem may aggravate as not only land, but the air has also got polluted. Dirty water of Chitti Bein and Satluj river, which has inundated the villages, is mixing with sewer water of municipal bodies of Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Phagwara and Hoshiarpur. Besides this, effluents of leather complex in Jalandhar are also getting mixed in it. "Dirty water will spread deadly diseases here, which may lead to an epidemic," said Kaku Singh of Ludhiana, who is working on the bandh for the past three days and has been suffering from skin infection.
"My entire family is suffering from boils and rashes on skin," said Jagir Singh of Mandhala village. "The moment wind blows, we almost pass out due to the stench," said Nirmal Singh of Mundi Kalu village. "If floods cannot be stopped, at least the release of dirty water into the Bein should be plugged," said Dr Rajinder Singh Gill, who has been touring flood-hit areas with eight teams of the doctors. "We are getting number cases of skin diseases," said Dr Gill, adding, "A few diarrhoea cases have also been reported though liquid chlorine and tablets have been distributed." Chemicals from factories have not only damaged the paddy crop, but would also affect the next crop of wheat, said farmers.
