CHENNAI, 25 OCT: In line with the concept of green buildings (in photo) here is a novel attempt to declare a temple situated in North Tamil Nadu as a standing example of a green architecture. The Sri Narayani Peedam, also known as the Golden Temple, situated at Sripuram near Vellore, about 150 km from Chennai, bags the unique award for a temple. The temple has put into practice solid and liquid waste management, bio-gas generation, rain water harvesting, organic farming, hill and campus afforestation for an integrated green architecture within the campus. Today the temple is a vision of lush green grass with terracotta tiled ceiling over the 1.5 kms long star shaped foot path leading to the temple in the centre, all of which, allows for natural light and wind for a temple pilgrim. Inaugurated in August 2007, the temple was advised by Chennai based Exnora International to go in for green practices which has led it to become a major lung complex for the parched Vellore town. From a small temple just 300 square feet, it now boasts of a 100 acre spread which has become popular among devotees for the large golden gopuram akin to the Tirupati Tirumala temple. Incidentally, this temple is also dedicated to lord Narayana. The novel experiment was inspired by Exnora which guided them for an integrated architecture.
