After SEZs, villagers turn ire on borewells

After the Special Economic Zones, villagers of Loutolim are bracing for yet another battle, this time against the indiscriminate sinking of bore well in the Verna Industrial Estate. Loutolim gram Sabha members, Sarpanch, and panch members recently called on the IDC Managing Director, A V Palekar and vociferously objected to the sinking of bore wells and asked him to immediately cap all the existing bore wells sunk with or without permission in the Industrial Estate. They warned that the villager would be compelled to take the law the law in their own hands and forcibly enter each and every unit in the Industrial estate. On the request of the delegation, the IDC, MD has assured the people to intimate them a date for joint inspection within eight days. Franky Monteiro said the MD was at a loss to explain how the GIDC had granted 20 permissions for sinking of bore wells without having the authority to do so. The MD is believed to have denied having done nay study of the water levels of the area and to check if the sinking of bore wells would affect the public. The effect of sinking bore wells was deliberated at the last gram Sabha meeting wherein members said the once famous Casterwaddo spring at Quelossim, which was extensively used by people from far and near for picnics during summer had dried up totally. Similarly, members had pointed out that another famous spring "Udo' at Verna had also dried up. Members claimed that these springs were also used to potable and irrigational purposes by residents who live in the interior remote areas of these villages depend on the spring water for irrigation.
