The draft transport agreement between the UP and Delhi governments is a step ahead for the Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority appointed by the Supreme Court to monitor government projects with the aim of preventing pollution by decongesting the city. Stating that for interstate public transport, nothing short of CNG would be allowed in the NCR, EPCA chairman Bhure Lal said the idea behind the agreement was not just to facilitate movement but also to get more people to use public transport. "The fact that this agreement creates room not just for buses but also taxis and autorickshaws from UP into the Capital is only a way to make way for more public transport,' Bhure Lal said. Added EPCA member Sunita Narain: "We have to make a choice between autos and cars. Is a car which carried one or two people better or a few more autos that can ferry a lot more commuters. EPCA will study the matter.' She said more buses, eased norms for taxis and autos will also mean getting more people onto public transport, paving the way for less pollution. Delhi transport minister Haroon Yusuf said the agreement will ensure seamless movement in the NCR. The draft agreement between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will factor in the multilateral agreements amongst the four NCR states. ambika.pandit@timesgroup.com
