: State agriculture minister, Mr Naren Dey today said that though a potato farmer had committed suicide in the state, it is yet to be established whether financial distress, due to a bumper potato produce this season, had driven the farmer to commit suicide. Replying to a question in the Assembly today, Mr Dey said that he had written to the Burdwan superintendent of police to know the exact cause of the farmer's suicide at Someshpur village in Memari on last Saturday. "But as per the report that we have received there is no indication that the farmer had committed suicide because of his inability to repay agricultural loan,' said Mr Dey. It may be recalled that police recovered the body of Lalan Mullick (45), a potato farmer on 22 March. His family members had alleged that after a bumper production of potato, Lalan was not getting enough price for his produce. He had taken a loan and feared that he won't be able to repay that, which lead him to commit suicide, his family had claimed. n sns
