Ahmedabad beats 16 cities in environmental awareness

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has added: another feather in its cap after the city emerged as the topper among 16 major cities of the country for taking lead in environmental awareness.
This was announced during a two-day workshop on `Clean Technology and Efficiency Measures while Developing Infrastructure Projects for Improvement of Urban Environment' organised by International Council for Local Environment issues (ICLEI)-South Asia in Coimbatore on March 13.
Sixteen cities from the country had signed an Urban Environmental Accord (UEA) in 2005. Under UEA, it became mandatory for cities to promote development keeping in view environmental impact and make efforts to create awareness for clean environment. An effort in this direction was made through "2000 millennium development goals" fixing responsibility on urban bodies for implementation of various agreements signed through international co-operation.
The 16 cities include Ahmedabad, Aligarh, Bhilai, Bhopal, Calicut, Darbanga, Delhi, Gwalior, Hyderabad, Jammu, Jamnagar, Kota, Lucknow, Mumbai, Muzaffarpur and Mysore.
AMC commissioner IP Gautam said, "Ahmedabad has bagged the award for implementing maximum measures on environmental health. Experts from reputed organisations visited different cities and took information from officers governing these cities. They fount Ahmedabad, among the best city for implementing the required
