While there are around 220 parks within the Municipal Council limits of the city, around 140 of them are being maintained by the park development committees that work under the Council. The Council now plans to bring the remaining parks also under the park development committees. Residentspeak A resident of Sector 4, Leena Goyal, said, "While the developed parks are being maintained well, there are around five to six parks in the sector that are still to be developed. And with the monsoon season arriving in the city, under-developed parks have Congress grass growing all over.' She added that there is also the need to involve more people in the maintenance of these parks so that the overall beautification of the areas could be done in the best possible way. Similar sentiments were echoed by a resident of Sector 19, Rahul Gupta, who said, "We have been staying in this sector for eight years now, but there are hardly any parks in the area that are being developed. Also there is a vast open area lying as wasteland in the sector with only Congress grass all over.' Manoj Duggal, a resident of Sector 6, said that though they are satisfied with the maintenance of various parks of the sector, there is a need to develop certain parks specifically as playgrounds so that children of the sector can utilise the space for playing. "Parks with flower beds and costly grass patches get spoilt if used by children to play. There is an immediate need to have special playgrounds in each sector so that neither the beauty of the parks is spoilt nor the children face a dearth of space to play. Officialspeak Talking to Newsline, President of Municipal Council Ravinder Rawal said, "We understand the importance of development and maintenance of the various parks in the different sectors and the city's greenery. At present we have around 140 among the 220 parks of the city under park development committees. We, however, plan to bring all the other parks also under them. In fact, when the parks' maintenance was handed over to us in 2004 by the HUDA without the provision of any horticulture staff, we decided to encourage peoples' participation for park maintenance through the park development committee.' He added that it has recently been decided that while till now the various park development committees were being given Re 1 per square metre for the maintenance of the area, the amount has now been increased to Rs 1.50. Rawal also added that looking at the growing need to have playgrounds for the children, Deputy CM Chandermohan has asked the authorities of various government schools to allow children of their respective sectors to use the school playgrounds for the purpose of playing in the evenings.
