Ranchi : The Birsa Munda Airport (BMA) authorities would have to part with some land for a four-lane approach road to the terminal from Hinoo Chowk. Officials said they are planning to expand the approach road to 25m. The Rs 3-crore project is being planned in view of the National Games. According to the plan, the boundary wall of the airport from Hinoo Chowk to where the state government's hangar begins would be demolished to make way for the road. "About an acre of the airport land would be taken and used for the construction of the four-lane road,' said N.N. Sinha, the road construction secretary. The encroached airport land between Ma Santoshi temple near Hinoo Chowk and the BMA would be evacuated and used for the new road, he added. The new BMA boundary wall would come up 10m inside the present boundary wall. The state government would be bearing the cost of the construction. "I have asked the engineers to prepare a work plan to finish the construction before November,' Sinha said. He said the detailed plan report of the road is ready and the construction would begin soon. Another aspect of the project would focus on cutting the tall trees along the airport road and planting smaller trees. "This will not only widen the breadth of the approach road but will also help us deal with the problem of birds hitting the planes. Birds' nest on the huge trees along the airport road increases the chances of birds hitting aircraft,' said an airport official. Earlier, the environment committee of the BMA had decided to replace the tall trees beside the road with smaller ones to address the possible threat of birds hitting the planes. A bird hit had occurred in 2006 and the threat is imminent with the trees providing shelter.
