Alarming rise in Yamuna water

Rescue teams evacuating people from the Yamuna bank on Sunday NEW DELHI: The Yamuna is in spate and a high alert has been sounded. After the river rose to 204.60 metres on Sunday evening, authorities expecting the worst have begun the process of evacuation of people from around the river bed. The river is expected to surpass the danger level of 204.83 metres by Monday morning. By 5 p.m. on Saturday, more than 4. 09 lakh cusecs of water was released into the river at Hathni Kund. It takes about 48 hours for the water to reach Delhi from Hathni Kund, which is about 200 km upstream. According to a Haryana Irrigation Department official, it is after 13 years that the river water has increased to such a large quantum.
