Alert sounded in Assam after 20 killed in floods

The floods have claimed 20 lives so far even as the situation in central Assam, Majuli river island and Kaziranga National Park remained grim and further deteriorated on Thursday.
The Assam government sources said that the situation worsened on Thursday as the Dikrong breached embankment at Morisapathar, Ahomgaon area in North Lakhimpur district. The Barpeta district administration has issued warning to those living in Bohori area to remain alert as the embankment had become vulnerable at some points. The situation in the river island Majuli continued to be grave. Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday made an aerial survey of the island.
The Water Resources Department (WRD) sources said that the condition in the island aggravated because of breaches caused by flood waters on the PWD roads. These roads served in several parts of the island as embankment.
Meanwhile, the help outpouring towards the Bihar flood have sparked allegation of discrimination towards Assam. Most Opposition political parties and national organisations accused New Delhi of discrimination while extending help to Bihar. The CPI leader Pramod Gogoi said:
