NEW DELHI Algae, one of the commonly found fresh water plants could be the simple "environment friendly' answer to the fuel shortage in the country. Biotechnology pioneer Biocon Limited chairman and managing director Kiran Mazumdar Shaw on Tuesday called for a comprehensive policy on research and production of bio fuels with algae as an important component. "Algae is easy to grow and can be harvested all round the year resulting in consistent supply of fuel. It can produce 11,000-90,000 litres of biofuel per hectare as compared to 2,800 litres per hectare by Jatropa plant. It can be set up as an entrepreneurial venture along the coast,' she said.
