The state government will set up laboratories soon at all district headquarters in the state for water testing to provide safe drinking water to people after it was found that most diseases are caused by polluted drinking water. These laboratories will be funded by IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development) and set up by the Indian Institute of Public Health, Union ministry of health. One mobile unit will be placed at the nine ITDAs in the state to collect water samples regularly from interior areas of the Agency. Hardness of water and bacterial contamination will be tested. Mr Mudavath Mallikarjun Naik, the project officer of ITDA, Utnoor, said that in principle, it was agreed to set up a laboratory at Adilabad district headquarters and a mobile unit at Utnoor. The Central government has released Rs 5 crores for the repairs of drinking water schemes which are defunct. A total of 112 defunct drinking water schemes were identified in Sirpur (U), Narnoor, Jainoor and Kerameri mandals. Efforts are being made on a war-footing to restore such drinking water schemes in the Agency, said Premsagar Rao, the Congress MLC.
