The hunger-strike by some senior legislators, swamijis of various mutts and several senior citizens of Bagalkot district demanding better and sympathetic rehabilitation package for those who would be displaced by the Upper Krishna irrigation project has caused tension in and around the city and made the government take note of their agitation. The protest is being spearheaded by Krishna Meldande Yojana Hitarakshana Samithi. Their main demands include higher compensation for the evacuees, 10 per cent job reservation and better rehabilitation package.
