AHMEDABAD: Soon after a course on carbon credits was launched in the most premium management institute of the country, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A ) is exploring options of earning some carbon credits for itself. Akshat Khare - an alumnus of IIM-A from the 2007 batch and was among the six students who had ventured on their own - is helping the institute explore the option of using solar energy to illuminate the campus. Khare, an entrepreneur, who deals with light emitting diodes (LEDs), has taken up a green consultancy assignment at IIM-A campus. Currently, he is studying outdoor lighting of the campus and will be suggesting environmentfriendly alternatives. The founder of Nessa Technologies, Khare has now partnered with Ahmedabad based, Pegasus Semiconductor. Professor Samir Barua, director of the institute, took a tour of the campus to see the first few test lamps that were installed on the campus on Wednesday. "The campus is huge and a significant amount of power is used in lighting the outdoors and the corridors. We are assessing the power consumption of the existing sodium lights, which consume 90 watts and will come up with substitutes with LEDs that run on solar power and consume 6 watts. According to the calculation till now, this will reduce the electricity bill by at least 10 to 15 per cent," Khare said. "We will be giving lighting solutions for parking lights, street lights, corridor lights and solar power packs, which will utilise the otherwise vacant terraces of the institute building and faculty residence. Classroom lighting system will not be changed, but we will give options of illumination where more lighting is not needed," said Khare. The project was initiated more than a month ago and Khare will submit the final report next month. He will list options for areas in the campus where energy can be used efficiently or replaced with solar power.
