Americans fish as resentful Canadians observe a salmon ban

In Port Simpson and other communities on British Columbia's northern coast, this fishing season has brought renewed frustration, as stalled talks between Canada and Alaska on the Pacific Salmon Treaty have exposed yet another dispute over salmon fishing rights. Since the treaty expired in 1994, the United States and Canada have been able to make only year-to-year agreements. Last year in a dispute, they were unable to manage even that much, which led to a standoff between Canadian fishermen and an Alaskan ferry.
