Kankaria Zoo Will Soon Have India's First Double-decker Enclosure To House Reptiles And Amphibians
How about a walk with Anaconda and King Cobra beside you, with exotic frogs and toads jumping right over your head? Welcome to India's first 'double-decker' zoo. The Kamla Nehru Zoological Park at Kankaria will soon have a unique two-storeyed enclosure, with a reptile house in the ground floor and a home for amphibian on top.
The construction of the structure, which will stand over 750 square metre, is on. This will not only ensure more space for reptiles, which are now in cramped enclosures, but also provide a unique experience for visitors.
The central road of the zoo will be elevated to about eight to 10 feet from the ground, creating a ramp on which will take visitors to the first floor housing the amphibians in four glass enclosures. Below it will be circular home for reptiles, which will have 17 enclosures. The entry for this will on the ground floor itself.
With sunshine being a necessity for reptiles, there will be glass panes in the upper ceiling of the ground floor which separates the two species. Similar glass pane at the topmost ceiling will ensure sunlight in the amphibian enclosure too. The space for the visitors will f be dark, which will ensure better viewing of species. "At present, this is a problem area as reflection of light on the glass windows makes it difficult for visitors to view the reptiles. The reptiles too are in the darker zone now," says a zoo official. Reptile lovers have something to look forward to as the new reptile enclosure will also have the King Cobra, Anaconda and American Iguana. While the Anaconda will be flown in from Sri Lanka, the other two will be from Chennai, Guahati and Kolkata zoos.
Now, Zoo to get ostrich
Ahmedabad: While the Kamla Nehru Zoological Park awaits the giraffe, yet another surprise is in store for city's nature lovers. The zoo will soon get ostriches, and will be the only one in the state to host these birds from Down Under. Other big birds already in the zoo are the emu, kasawari and rhea.
"We would get at least one pair. And, since these are bred in India, it will be easy for them to acclimatise. And, placing the ostriches near the emus will make them feel at home. These birds are flightless but good runners.
They also kick hard. We will have enough space for them," said a zoo official. A new aviary is also coming up over a five-acre land. This will be about 30 feet high, leaving ample space for birds to fly around without any obstruction. The aviary will be divided into various sections, with one each for water birds, parakeets, lorikeets, large birds like emu, ostrich and kasawari, and pheasants.
