Anantapur tops in Indiramma

Anantapur district topped the state in speeding up works of the second phase of houses under the Indiramma scheme at the field level. Construction of houses is going on at a snail's pace in Kadapa, Kurnool and Chittoor districts. The State government has directed officials to speed up construction of houses. It wants to organise inauguration of houses, constituency-wise, in view of elections in 2009. The government has also taken up selection of beneficiaries for the third phase of Indiramma houses. In view of criticism from opposition parties that there are lapses in selection of beneficiaries and construction of houses, a website was started to monitor progress of construction of houses in the state. Full details of Indiramma housing beneficiaries were placed online to know about shortage of cement and funds for the programme in the districts. The government is also taking steps to check corruption in the second phase of Indiramma housing construction and to speed up construction of houses. As part of this, 2.14 lakh houses were sanctioned to Anantapur district. Of them, construction of 1,10,498 houses is at various stages. As per official reports, Anantapur topped the state in speeding up 50 per cent of houses sanctioned under the second phase of the programme. In Kadapa district, the native district of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, construction of only 36,312 houses was started, out of the sanctioned 1,12, 408 houses. Basement works were not started in 76,096 houses. In Chittoor district, works relating to 54,048 houses were started out of 1,44,792 houses sanctioned. Works relating to 90,744 houses are yet to be started. In Kurnool district, construction of only 30,616 houses was started out of 1,42, 954 houses sanctioned. Works on 1,12, 338 houses were not started. Housing officials in Anantapur district have formulated details relating to payments to be made to beneficiaries at various stages and progress of works. They are encouraging housing beneficiaries to speed up works.
