Huzra (Jagraon): After Mattewara, about 120-foot-high dhussi dam here was washed away yesterday night due to strong water pressure. The damage started on Tuesday with little erosion, but by last night a part of the dam was eroded. Repair work has been started. Four villages along the bank, Bhagpur, Kaniya, Huzra and Prempura, have been inundated. Notably, this site faces damage almost every alternate year. Jagraon SDM Gurloveleen Singh said, "As repair work was started immediately, not much damage has been reported. This point has become sensitive over the years, but efforts are being made to strengthen it.' The water level today was 26,000 cusecs. Thousands of sandbags have been put up at the site. Amarjit Singh Dullet, SE, Sirhind Canal, said, "These four villages are low-lying, but efforts were made well in time.' Though water level is receding, experts in the Drainage Department said damage always occurs at this stage. Meanwhile, work at Mattewara is on and more than 20,000 earth filled bags have been used till now.
