Another elephant calf found dead

Siddapura, DH News Service: A two-year-old female elephant calf died under mysterious circumstances in Kallahalla forest area in Titimati of the district. It appears that the calf might have died at least five days back. It stinks. It has been suspected that the elephant calf might have died due to foot-and-mouth disease, that may be spread from the cattle which graze in forest area. The public who came to know about the deceased elephant informed the same to the Forest department on Saturday, following which Madikeri division Deputy Conservator of Forest B B Mallesh and other officials rushed to the spot and examined. After veterinary doctor from Hunsur Dr Srinivas conducted the post mortem, the carcass was burnt at the same place. In the meantime, the death of two wild elephants and one wild buffalo in Kodagu and Nagarahole area in the past one week, has caused many doubts. It has been suspected that all deaths might have taken place due to the foot-and-mouth disease.
