Ahmedabad: Days after two leopards stalking Gandhinagar were caught, one more leopard has been spotted near Dehgam in Gandhinagar district in the last one month.
Earlier this month, one leopard was caught from Kalol and another near Sant Sarovar dam in Gandhinagar. Both were sent to Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh and later released in the jungle.
The leopard sighted in Dehgam is about 4-5 years old and it may have travelled from the forests of central Gujarat. Initially, it was rumoured that there are two leopards. However, pugmarks of only one have been found.
Foresters say that the confusion arose since pugmarks on loose sandy surface appeared much bigger than the one on hard ground
D Vasavda, deputy conservator of forests says, there is only one leopard in the area. He said that this leopard is on the move and was spotted in Sabarkantha, Nadiad and Gandhinagar. However, it is roams more in Dehgam area. Vasavda said that the animal has not harmed the residents in the area and hence there was no point in laying traps.
Officials said that the sighting of the leopard are bound to increase as the number was growing in the state. According to 2006 population estimation by the forest department, there are about 1,070 leopards spread in the entire state.
According to the forest department, as compared to 2002 census, the population of leopard has increased by seven per cent. Officials said that the leopards are moving out in search of food. They love to eat dogs, goat and pigs. Officials further said that it is usually the male which venture out of their territory.
