The number of antelopes is dwindling day by day in the district, thanks to nature's fury and the laxity of authorities. Hundreds of antelopes including Chinkara, Chousinga, Spotted Deer and Sambar were living in the islands of Godavari River including Narayanalanka, Addankivarilanka, Veedhivarilanka, Kedarulanka, Sathemmalanka and Nandapallilanka. The antelopes made these islets their habitat because of availability of plenty of vegetation and tall grass. However, the animals face a tough ordeal during the Godavari floods that occur between July and August every year. The islets come under water and many of them perish for want of food. Over the years, the number of antelopes in the islets has come down from 1,000 to 200. The herbivorous animals are also attacked by wild dogs, wolves and other animals. As rabies is rampant among the canine species, the antelopes develop rabies and perish in a few days. Though the black buck falls under the
