Forest authorities have succeeded in evicting more than 70,000 illegal settlers from the green forests and wetlands of this fertile Terai district, but the possibility of the hill migrants moving to neighboring districts and re-occupying the pristine forest areas still remains. The authorities removed more than 1500 hill migrants occupying an area of roughly 3000 hectares from the Basanta forest area alone as part of a drive against illegal forest encroachers last month.
