Mumbai : Anti-Jaitapur activists led by Pradeep Indulkar have now taken their protests global by launching a massive campaign in Germany, where they are organising 15 shows of his Yellow Oscar winning documentary film High Power on project affected people of the Tarapur nuclear power plant.
While the short film is being screened in Germany from September 12 to October 2, 10 shows are scheduled in France from October 4-10.
“This tour is dedicated to the Jaitapur struggle. It is an effort to rally international support for our struggle and talk to the global anti-nuclear community at a time when this protest is at a very critical junction. After every show, we have extensive discussions on India’s anti-nuclear movement and global nuclear issues. An appeal is made to pressure the German Areva workers and the suppliers. People in Germany know many details about Kudankulam and Jaitapur. We also have a banner signature campaign,” said Indulkar in a statement.
Even as the Maharashtra government approved an enhanced compensation for the project-affected at Jaitapur earlier this year, discussions are on between Areva and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for the proposed nuclear plant at Jaitapur.
Meanwhile, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) chairman R K Sinha said in Vienna Wednesday that the performance of India’s nuclear power plants and fuel cycle facilities had reached their highest levels last year and that the country was committed to implementing highest safety standards.
He was addressing the International Atomic Energy Agency or IAEA’s 57th general conference.
Sinha said the international community had learned its lessons from the Fukushima accident and come out with new guidelines to further enhance levels of safety in nuclear reactors.
