Agitation against anti-mega housing projects seems to have spread to the hinterland village of Curtorim in Salcete. Opposition is brewing against a housing project mooted by a Margao-based building in the village, with local citizens mobilizing the people to scrap the project. In fact, a signature campaign is on in the village since the last few days, with locals saying the mega housing project would affect the infrastructure in a big way. According to John D'Silva, a builder has submitted a file to the Curtorim village Panchayat for approval. "The locals of Curtorim are firmly against the project. We do nto want mega housing project in our peaceful village', he said. According to him, the locals have planned to hold ward-wise meetings in the village against any mega housing project in Curtorim. The locals have also called on the local Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco and expressed their opposition to the project. When contacted, Lourenco told Herald that he is all in favour of regulating the housing industry, especially in the villages. "No big projects, should be allowed to be set up in the village', he said, adding that he is solidly behind the people opposing the mega housing project. Interestingly, when John D'Silva claimed that the mega housing project has a provision for 90 apartments, Curtorim Sarpanch Veena Lourenco said the Panchayat has received a file for the construction of only 30 villas and bungalows. With anti-mega housing activisits carry out the signature campaign across Curtorim, the issue is likely to figure and deliberated threadbare at the next gram Sabha meeting of the Curtorim Panchayat. This is the first time that echoes of anti-housing projects have now been heard in Salcete's hinterland. Coastal villages such as Carmona, Orlim, Fatrade, Benaulim and Colva had been witnessing agitations against housing projects and construction of roads through fields to facilitate housing projects.
