Anti-pollution drive

  • 28/10/1998

The second phase of an anti-pollution drive was inaugurated in Dhaka city on Tuesday to check air pollution resulting from emission of black smoke and other elements caused by motor vehicles. The Department of Environment has launched this long-awaited drive along with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistracy and a number of voluntary organisations. This is good news, especially, since it is part of a long-term scheme, which will begin from January 1, 1999. Financed by the World Bank, the three-year Air Quality Management Project will enable 20 checkposts to be set up all over Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna by the year 2000.Meanwhile the growth of human population in all urban centres of the country is projected to continue unabated. Motor vehicles will also keep on increasing. (editorial)
