Making the situation more complex for the state government, activists opposing the Rs 12,000-crore Posco steel project at Paradip have formed a suicide squad. The Posco Pratirodha Sangram Samiti (PPSS), which is spearheading the anti-displacement movement, has formed the suicide squad with at least 50 members enrolled from Nuagaon panchayat, the proposed project site. The squad took oath at Sarala temple at Kanakpur in Jagatsinghpur district on Sunday and vowed to lay down their lives protecting their "motherland." The fresh development has come as a headache for the state government, which has promised the South Korean steel major Posco all help for land acquisition. Posco needs at least 4004 acres of land for its Greenfield project. After Gobindpur, the villagers of Nuagaon are now united to protest the 12-million-tonne integrated steel project. Nuagaon panchyat, considered as a pro-Posco stronghold, has witnessed a shift with many of those who had supported the socio-economic survey switching over to the anti-project camp. "Goddess Sarala is the presiding deity of Jagatsinghpur district. She will help us protect our land as well as livelihood," Chitta Swain, who leads the squad, said.
