The Andhra Pradesh government is understood to have decided to penalise Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited (Wapcos) for failing to complete the survey in time on Pranahita-Chevella lift irrigation scheme. The public sector enterprise under the aegis of the union ministry of water resources was hired for Rs 2.5 crore for the project aimed at irrigating 18 lakh acres in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Medak and Ranga Reddy districts. It is considered to be the highest lift irrigation scheme in the world, taking water to a height of 530 metres and carrying to a distance of 300 km through pipelines.
