Apple has been accused of having a 'toxic' work environment, which current and ex-workers say their their mental health problems stem from, a report published Wednesday said.
One ex-worker, referred to as 'Marcus' in the piece from Mic, told the website he suffered from depression at the company and spent four months homeless during his time there for 'some sort of release'.
'Marcus' recalled: 'It was a completely chaotic spiral into depression — into not feeling like anyone gave a s**t.'
He said he didn't feel this way before becoming an Apple employee.
'Marcus' was called a 'wetback' by another worker, but feared he'd be made fun of and skipped filing a formal complaint, the report said.
He told Mic: 'I brought up having a meeting with HR with a couple of my managers because I felt they weren't taking me seriously at one point, but nothing ever came of that.'
Current worker 'Ben' has attempted to commit suicide two times and blames it on the company's environment, the report said.
'Ben' claimed to Mic that colleagues used the phrase 'Ben-ing out' to describe mental health stress in his department.
He alleged: 'It was openly discussed and used by management, too. I was in the hospital for suicide help. And nobody can get help because they've stigmatized my situation.'
Ex-worker 'Jackson' told Mic he left due to bigotry, discrimination and racism.
He told the website: 'Right before my departure, I heard management joking that they should make a rule that anyone going out on mental health breaks is obviously not fit for the job, so they shouldn't promote them.
'I can only imagine this mentality, even in joking, came out in literal ways through their managing. My department had one of the highest turnover rates because of the stress.'
An Apple spokesperson told the website: 'We have an amazing team at Apple who are dedicated to creating the world's best products and enriching people's lives.
'Our culture brings out the best in people and treating one another with dignity and respect is at the core. Employees are free to suggest new initiatives, raise concerns, and provide feedback.
