ArcelorMittal rubs $300-m rehab balm on Orissas project affected

ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel producer, is proposing to spend $300 million in rehabilitation & resettlement (R&R) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) for its proposed 12 million tonne project in Orissa's Keonjhar. Last week, the steel behemoth gave a presentation to the Keonjhar district administration on its R&R and CSR plans. Remi Boyer, the group's vice-president (CSR), is in India with a delegation to oversee CSR strategies for the Orissa and Jharkhand projects. Company sources said the R&R policies are going to be the backbone of the CSR strategy and will be an inclusive one. ArcelorMittal, which is proposing to set up the steel project at an estimated cost of $10 billion, is expected to come out with the detailed project report (DPR) by June, 2008.The plant is expected to go on stream by 2012.
