The Jharkhand forest department suffered a setback when the union home ministry stalled delivery of 250 Self Loading Rifles (SLRs) to the State forest department, official sources said. To meet the increasing threat of poachers and Naxalites, the forest department had given an order to a ordinance factory for delivery of 250 SLRs. The Jharkhand forest department is constantly under threat from the Naxalites. The wildlife and the forest officials themselves are always under threat. Naxalite groups have even directed forest officials to vacate the jungle or face the consequences. The fact that about half dozen forest officials have been killed and more than one dozen forest department offices and guesthouses attacked in the last two years, has spurred the forest department to purchase modern weapons.
