Army called in after torrential rain wrecks havoc in Rajasthan

100 villages flooded in Chaksu tehsil of Raipur district The Rajasthan government on Sunday sought help from the Army to rescue people in Chaksu tehsil of Raipur district following torrential rain which flooded close to 100 villages following breaches in several anicuts. Thikariya Meenan dam was overflowing with water and posed a serious threat to the villages. Four days of heavy rain in Jaipur district wrecked havoc in the region leaving several low lying areas even in the State Capital submerged. However, the worst affected was Chaksu tehsil where several villages were cut off from the rest of the State after being submerged due to breaches in anicuts. Over a 100 villages were affected due to flooding. Kotkhwada village was submerged in 4 feet deep water. While the local administration and the State Disaster and Relief Force personnel shifted villagers to safer places and temporary relief camps, Army was requisitioned later in the afternoon to help in the operations, led by District Collector Krishna Kunal. Four trucks carrying 70 Army jawans were expected to reach Chaksu by late night. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Chief Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi were monitoring the operations, government sources told The Hindu . “So far there have been no reports of any casualties. Army has been called by the District Collector as a precautionary measure,” Kunji Lal Meena, secretary SDRF said. Reports reaching here suggested water had gushed into as many as 300 house and 50 houses had collapsed in Chaksu tehsil forcing people to seek shelter on rooftops or move to schools and community halls which were converted into temporary shelters. Food, water and other supplies were being sent from Jaipur. Electricity and water supply to these villages had been affected for the past two days. Chaksu received 140 mm of rain in the past 24 hours.
