Army fights a different battle - over forest on Tibet border

It's all quiet on the border with Tibet in this north Sikkim outback. But the Indian Army is engaged in a war of attrition, not across the border, but with the forest department of the Sikkim Government. On the face of it, the fight is over control of the pristine forests in the higher altitudes of the Himalayas in north Sikkim. In the past few weeks, local people too have joined the fray, complaining that the forests have been made out of bounds for them and their livestock. But there is also the suspicion that the powerful timber smuggling lobby is trying to build up public sentiments against the Army.
