Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy interacts with students from Kozhikode, who are on an indefinite hunger strike against the India-U.S. nuclear deal in New Delhi on Saturday. Writer and human rights activist Arundhati Roy on Saturday extended her support to a group of students from Kozhikode who have been sitting on an indefinite hunger-strike at Jantar Mantar here for the past six days protesting against the proposed India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal. Admirable move Ms. Roy told the students that she was "absolutely against the proposed nuclear deal,' adding that the protest was "an admirable and moral move by a group of students.' Protesting under the "Students Against Nuclear Power' banner, the students are demanding that the Union government not sign the nuclear deal, claiming that there was "no merit' in the agreement. Clearly concerned about the welfare of the six young protesters, including three girls, Ms. Roy said: "The protest is a moral move by these young people desperately concerned about something that they should be worried about. I am concerned about their welfare and proud that there are young people who are different from the lot that is high on the malls and shopping culture. The move by these young people is especially admirable because they have come to protest alone without a star or a celebrity.' Maintaining that she was against the proposed nuclear deal, Ms. Roy said: "Entering into an embrace with the United States is suicidal and we have the benefit of looking into its history with its allies.' Meanwhile, representatives of various students' organisations have been visiting the protesting students.
