Assam - 14 districts declared drought-hit

MANOJ ANAND The Assam government on Wednesday declared drought-like situation in 14 out of 27 districts due to erratic monsoon that recorded far less than normal rainfall across the state this year. In this regard, a formal notification was also issued by the state revenue department after a review meeting with Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi. The districts facing drought like situation are- Bongaigaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nagaon and Sivasagar The principal secretary, revenue and disaster management Mr V. K Pipersenia in an official communication said that most of the districts facing drought like situation has recorded 20 per cent or more deficit rainfall this time He referred the norm according to which metrological drought means rainfall deficit exceeding 20 per cent with reference to normal rainfall in a district and agricultural drought means crop damage due to dry spells and uneven precipitation despite overall normal rains He pointed out that some of these drought-hit districts recorded very scanty rainfalls
