Guwahati: Even as flood continues to wreak havoc in Assam affecting close to 14 lakh people in 19 affected districts it has precipitated an unprecedented adversity for residents of centuries-old eastern Assam tea town of Dibrugarh which has virtually remained submerged in flood waters for the last four days.
Normal life in the town has been thrown out of gear with most of the shops, business establishments, education institutions remaining closed for the last four days. Ground floors of all the residents in the town have been inundated causing immense hardship to the residents who have been compelled to shift out of their deluged home.
Even the official residences of the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police (SP) have been submerged in flood water forcing the occupants to take shelter in safe houses.
An official source informed that the older part of the town had been severely affected due to the flood which is caused because of rising water level in Brahmaputra River that flows by the town. The town is in fact precariously placed with the bed of the Brahmaputra becoming shallow because of heavy siltation over the years.
Meanwhile, 2199 villages from 74 revenue circles have been devastated by the flood in 19 districts of the state. Standing paddy on over 1.76 lakh hectares has been affected with farers from worse affected Dhemaji, Barpeta and Darrang districts suffering the most. Over 64, 000 hectares of crop land has been submerged in Dhemaji district alone.
Maximum number of over 2.19 lakh people have been affected in Barpeta district followed by over 1.50 lakh in Dhemaji district, 1.46 lakh in Marigaon, 1.43 lakh in Darrang , 1.37 lakh in Dibrugarh district, 1.28 lakh in Nalbari, 1.26 lakh in Sonitpur. Severe damage has been caused to livestock and poultry in the state because of the flood.
The government has set up 385 relief camps so far where over 2.67 lakh flood-hit have taken shelter and are being provided with relief materials.
