Assam floods worsen, red alert sounded

The mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries continue to wreak havoc in Assam with thousands of people having been rendered homeless.
The flood situation turned grim in central and lower Assam districts but showed signs of improvement in upper Assam where the Brahmaputra has begun to recede.
The state authorities said that over 12 lakh people have been displaced in the state so far. This is the third time since June 1 that Assam has been ravaged by rising rivers. So far, 20 people have died due to the floods.
The flood has equally ravaged the precious wildlife sanctuaries of the state. Deputy commissioner of Golaghat district Diwakar Nath Mishra, who reviewed the flood scenario with authorities at Kaziranga National Park, said that park authorities are trying hard to save endangered animals which have taken refuge on National Highway 37 after the park was inundated. As a precautionary measure, the Golaghat district administration has clamped Section 144 on NH 37 that runs along Kaziranga so that vehicles do not overrun fleeing animals.
