Despite the Supreme Court ban on felling of trees and movement of timber, the forest cover in Assam has declined during the last five years. In 1997, Assam ranked 11th in the country's list of states having forest land. However, it came down to 12th in 1999 according to a forest department study. Forest Department officials said during this period, Assam's forest land has reduced by 850 sq km.
