If the Assam Forest Department succeeds in implementing its new liberal forest policy, agar, a tree which grows in abundance in Assam, will soon be a precious resource for a dividend-paying and income and employment-generating open industry in the State. As of now, there are a lot of restrictions on growing and trade of agar, thereby the State is deprived of the possible benefits it would have accrued had all restrictions imposed on the commodity withdrawn.
