A number of drinking water schemes in the State undertaken by the Assam Urban Water Supply and Sewage Board have not seen the light of the day. Though at least 32 such schemes for supplying water to various towns was initiated by the Board during 1989-94, only four of these schemes are functioning at present and that too not fully. The Board has, however, spent Rs 210 crore on these schemes. And in the name of implementation of these schemes, crores of rupees are spent on procuring pipes and other materials beforehand, which are found lying here and there.
