Assam ranks seventh among stages with a high school dropout rate. Though the state government has launched several schemes to lure more children to school, the primary and high school dropout rates have been climbing steadily. Official data puts Assam's gross dropout rate at 76.80 per cent for classes I to X. Sikkim, however, is the worst affected with a gross dropout rate of 88.06 per cent in 1999-2000. This is the last year for which official data is available.
