Farewell. T V Venkitachalam's leave-taking from National Herald as its editor-in-chief was such a scene that only a dying newspaper could offer. Behind the door with a faded bronze nameplate that announced his designation, Venkitachalam sat in his chamber with volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica, a huge portrait of a brooding Pandit Nehru, a telephone that occasionally rings, and an old typewriter going off colour. The air-conditioner in the room stopped working soon after the 70-year-old newspaper and its sister concern, Quami Awaz, brought out their last editions on April 1. But as the oldest employee of the newspaper, Venkitachalam, 79, could only recollect a hope Pandit Nehru had once offered: "I will not let the National Herald close down even if I have to sell Anand Bhawan (to avoid it).'
