The catalytic convertor, an invention that has sharply reduced smog from cars, has now become a significant cause of global warming, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. This spring E.P.A published a study estimating that nitrous oxide now accounts for 7.2 per cent of the gases that cause global warming. Cars and trucks, most fitted with catalytic convertors, produce nearly half of the nitrous oxide, the study said.
